I have not exactly been keeping up since the Puppeteers left town. If you missed it, the 6th annual Puppetfest Midwest was here in Trenton a couple weeks ago. I can't say enough about the people or the performances. I say that every year, but it's true. My daughter and I attended nearly every performance, as we have each of the six years. There are many others like us, who attend multiple performances. Each person attending for the first time said the same thing..."I had no idea!" The puppet theater performances are truly magical and interactive, enjoyable to young and old. This year, this little fledgling festival grew by leaps and bounds. The festival participants increased by about 20. Many of them young people, under thirty. Each night after the public performances, the puppeteers walk the two blocks down the street to the Onion for social gathering, cool drinks and good food. Many locals comment on driving by the Wild Onion, seeing it packed with people, but only one car (mine) parked on the street. This would be the reason. Usually, there are a couple nights with late night performances just for the festival participants. There is at least one night each year where the party goes much later at the Onion, this year it was a crazy dance party (last year fireworks were involved). And last but not least there is always a trip to Snappy's. This year on Karaoke night, "Summer Nights" from Grease was belted out by the puppeteer gals from Arizona while Paul Mesner and I (like a couple of crazy people)suddenly overtook the dancefloor. Seriously, I push so hard during that week, it takes me two weeks to recover. I realize I am not as young as I used to be. But, I work hard, and have exciting, memorable experineces all the while. However, the recovery time! Ugh! Since the departure of the puppet crowd, I have packed and delivered my daughter for 10 day Girl Scout Camp, and catered some huge events, as well. I am just now catching up. Which brings me to my point, the website was not updated over the weekend! We ARE finishing out the week with some tasty lunch specials, so, COME ON IN!

My friend Sherry loves our Very Fabulous Garden Turkey Tortilla Wraps. I have experienced many adventures with Sherry over the last 16 or so years. She was one of my early friends when I moved to Trenton. A true friend, who remains. Years ago, I owned a little flower and gift shop in Eastgate Shopping Center named Twigs, located right behind Huckleberry’s, between Frank the Barber and Hammet Insurance. I ran the shop during the week, and traveled the Midwest doing flower, home and craft shows on the weekends. Sherry worked in my place on Saturdays. The shop never looked so spiffy than at the end of Sherry’s shift. The entire store was dusted, swept, and each item was displayed just so. Generally, she spent as much as she earned, so it was a great deal for both of us! When I closed the shop, Sherry and her sons helped me pack up and move. She was there during my difficult pregnancy and the birth of my daughter. I was hospitalized for six days after Francesca’s birth. One of those days, after a post-partum melt-down, the charge nurse plastered a NO VISITORS sign on the closed door to my hospital room. I was awakened from a deep sleep to Sherry, standing on a chair over my hospital bed, flashing Polaroid pictures! She often brings Franny little gifts when she stops by after work. Last Halloween she bought a couple sets of goofy fake lips and teeth.. We all put them on, and laughed so hard I thought I would die. I could tell one hundred gut-busting Sherry stories. Like when she injured her neck, but kept waiting tables on Wild Onion Friday Nights while on major pain medication….loopy! Or, when she climbed up on the icy roof in her work clothes to rescue our cat. She is so much fun to be around…..and she loves our Very Fabulous Garden Turkey Tortilla Wrap, which is our special every other Wednesday all summer long.

So, last year at the 5th annual Puppetfest Midwest, a budding artist performed live music during the lunch hour at the Onion. He has graciously agreed to do it all again, TODAY! Matthew McGee plays the guitar and sings his own original music. He is so extraordinarily talented. Just one fantastic reason to show up for Meatball or Three Cheese Lasagna. (His CD's will be available for purchase, as well.) Ok, so if you haven't had the opportunity in the last five years to attend the performances at the Puppetfest Midwest, here's your chance. Every year about this time, for one week, some big-time talent shows up in little old Trenton. Check out the website to get the lowdown. www.puppetfestival.org

Ever since I was a little girl, our family has been the kind of family who gathers around a meal. Oh, the main event can be a holiday, birthday, special guest, party...whatever, but the real fanfare surrounds the meal. When I was very small it was Sunday at my grandparent's house. We called my grandpa, Poppo, and my grandma, Nonnie, but my brother and I always called their house "Poppa-nonnies". It was a destination in and of itself. They, both of them, loved to cook. Nonnie turned out huge pots of "sugo" with meatballs and Italian sausage, and always some kind of pork to flavor the sauce. Poppo loved to cook-out on his brick barbeque. I still make a homegrown tomato salad w/ onions and basil inspired by his recipe that appears on our sides menu in the summertime. This weekend, this meal, it was Father’s Day. Of course we gathered around a table. I ordered King Crab Legs, my Dad’s Favorite, to celebrate. We met at my brothers and had drinks on the patio, while the crab legs simmered in the seasoned scalding water. When it was time, two huge steaming bowls were placed in the middle of the table. I knew my Dad was happy when he got that little sideways grin. In the end, I don’t know what was more satisfying, the seafood, or the equal shared love of the stuff between my daughter and Boo, the name she gave her grandpa while she was very small. The next day he called to ask me how to make crab salad with the leftovers. A success. Good food, good company. I was raised that way. Come on in to the Onion, sit down for a great meal with a good friend. What a way to spend your lunch hour! We’ll be seeing you!

A GREAT RIDE

This month has brought about a long list of last times. If you are the parent of a child in school, you know what I mean. Shew! Last Book Club, last day to be a library helper, last day of volunteering in the Rissler Library every Monday, last time to eat lunch with Franny in the elementary school cafeteria (she assures me eating lunch together in Middle School is not an option), last K-4 Spring Program, last day of our Church after-school program, last Girl Scout Meeting, last Missouri Project, oh, the list goes on. Here's the one that got me. Picking up my daughter at Rissler School for the very last time. Yeah, I didn't shed a tear the first day of Kindergarten! Somehow that last drive up to the front door turned on the waterworks! I was waiting in the car-rider pick up line, same as I have nearly every day for the last five years, when I noticed all the teachers congregating at the bottom of the hill. The on-duty stop-sign-holder-of-the-day stepped forward......then, as if it was the climax at the end of a movie, the send off began. Every single teacher stood together, smiling, waving, cheering, shouting goodbye, as each and every bus drove past for the very last time, this year. At precisely the same moment, Franny climbed into the car. We looked at eachother... I saw her in my mind's eye on the first day of Kindergarten. She wondered what the heck was my tearful problem?! The buses passed, and up the hill came the enthusiastic bunch of educators, this time waving off the cars remaining. There was "our" Mrs. Griffin, Mr. Schelker (who single handed-ly made a country music fan of my daughter), Mrs. Walker (also known at our house as Mrs. Walker says....), and Mrs.Brewer who shouted out, "Bye, Franny!". Her elementary school years flashed before my eyes. We waved back and just like that, I drove away with my new Middle-Schooler. Oh, does time ever fly. Thank you, Rissler. Thanks for a great ride. See you at lunch! Pam

This week, my Mother brought me the most fantastic, first of the year, nature-sweet-melt-in-your-mouth-home-grown strawberries. I look forward to strawberry season every year. It reminds me of a strawberry picking trip I once took with my Grandpa (Poppy) and my Mom. It must have been the late eighties, and Poppy was always coming up with Saturday day trip destinations. This time it was strawberry pickin! I was not experienced in strawberry picking, and let me tell you locating those little jewels can be a back breaking, dirt-crawling job. The three of us picked half the day. I can still see Poppy in that strawberry patch, jeans and suspenders, and a straw hat that I only remember him wearing that day. He looked up at me and smiled, laughed, and went back to picking. Over the next week I made a years supply of strawberry freezer jam in the kitchen of his little Leavenworth, KS house. I did the work while he sat at the kitchen table sipping coffee, and telling me the best way to go about the job. Poppy would have LOVED free shortcake in May.

A week or so ago, the most wonderful surprise met me at the cash register counter. Dean and Carol Elliott! Know them? Oh my goodness, what wonderful people. Back eight plus years ago, before purchasing the Wild Onion, I attempted without success to purchase the former Ace Hardware Building just down the way. The Elliott's were retiring from the hardware business just as I was getting started. Though the purchase of their building didn't work out for me, I made some wonderful friends in the process. Before opening the doors of the building I did purchase (the former Belle's Cafe), I spent three weeks cleaning and shining the restaurant. One day Dean and Carol showed up to help. Dean installed all the counter stools while Carol painted the bathroom. Yeah. I'll never forget their kindness. To know them is to love them. Since then, they've moved on to a life of travel. I tell you, an unexpected visitor keeps what can seem monotonous, vivid and exciting! Ah, the little things. Hey, The Two-fer $5 Tenderloin is back! Come on in! See you at lunch! Pam

The weather is trying to warm....I think! Anyway, even a couple warm days inspire me to rotate some items on the menu. Gone temporarily are some cold weather favorites. Back by request is our Delicious Rueben, and a new spring wrap is on the way. Keep checking back for the new stuff! Thanks, always, for your business. Pam

Our seating capacity has doubled with the beautiful "Loft" addition. It's a wonderful space filled with original art from local artists. Give us a call and we will make a reservation for you, too.
